John Stuart Mill (Essay on Liberty)

‘The liberty of the individual must be thus far limited; he must not make himself a nuisance to other people.’

Oh Emily

I have the cutest video of K laughing but I can't get it uploaded...I will try again tomorrow. For now, we'll post one of Em. It's not the best but she is tracking so well with her eyes that I love it. What a miracle those little eyes are! If you listen carefully, you can hear her breathing. That's what we talk about with her lungs...they should get better as she gets bigger but she needs to eat. Oh, they started feeding her but only as much as she will take from a bottle (about one third of an ounce).

This is posted in the NICU and I like it - particularly the one on patience and life - so I thought I would share.

I asked God to take away my pain.
God said No
It is not for me to take away but for you to give up.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole.
God said No
Her spirit is whole, her body is only temporary.

I asked God to grant me patience.
God said No
Patience is a by-product of tribulations. It isn’t granted, it is earned.

I asked God to give me happiness.
God said No
Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow.
God said No
You must grow on your own but I will prune you and make you fruitful.

I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life.
God said No
I will give you life so that you may enjoy all things.

I asked God to help me love others as much as he loves me.
God said…
Ahhh…finally you have the right idea.

My Own Crib

Well, Em has a tiny bit of blood from her stomach but it is so minimal that they are williing to blame it on the tube itself. Unless something happens, they plan to start feeding her tomorrow.

She is still desatting some and they had to up her oxygen overnight but when I got just a little upset at them, they immediately started weaning her and by the time I held her, she was back on room air...hmmmm...no more comments on that.

The eye dr also looked at her eyes and they are doing even better. PTL! At this point, he thinks she should have pretty decent vision (not just tunnel vision) with some nice, thick, but very cute glasses. :) He thinks the procedure they did at the other hospital worked 'spledidly well'.

As a side note, they have been using her birth date as 24 weeks and 3 days...that is what they originally had said and then we got all confused. So, using that to calculate, she will be full term on February 23. She is such a big girl that she is in an actual crib now. I will take pics soon so you can see it.

Still Unknown

We were able to speak with both the fellow and the attending drs today and...we have no idea what is wrong with Em. They are kind of stumped because this is very unusual for a baby that has been eating well for as long as she has. They have eliminated all the usual suspects and even some of the not so usual, but nothing. Her antibiotics will finish up tomorrow and that is normally when they would feed her. Instead, they will consider some different medicines but until her stomach is clear for at least 24hrs, they won't start feeding her again.

Poor girl is so crabby! Don't know how I would feel after a week of not eating, but this is the third nurse that has told us she needs to go to anger management classes. :) How did both my girls get daddy's temper? Guess it is good for Em, that is a lot of the reason she is still here. She is losing weight too...need to get real food in her soon!

After dad got her calmed down, I took a little video for all of us.

Just Because

I was downloading pics when I realized these were still on there and even though they are old, they were for a purpose so I will post them cause I can. :)

Swinging with Grandma...yeah, they got really washed out when they swung into the sun but it is so cute I had to put it on anyway. We are really grateful Grandma was able to take a day off and spend a long weekend helping us out while we were up in Pasadena.

When we got home, K decided to read up on ROP so she would know what is going on with her sister.

Really, she 'reads' for hours every day. I tell M she is just like him in every way but seriously, it is out of control. I think I donated some genes somewhere but all we've got is eye color and curly hair.

This is for Auntie M so she knows I really do let her in to the kitchen now, just to play with her birthday present.

Since I was distracted, she thought it was a good time to attempt a deposit in the dog's food bowl...until I 'caught' her. :)

I am feeling much better and will head in to see Em today. Thank you for your prayers.
